WoW Classic: What to Know About 20th Anniversary Edition Phase 2

World of Warcraft: Classic has remained popular since its original release in late 2019. Since then, the nostalgia-seeking veteran player base has remained surprisingly loyal to the Classic edition of WoW, with new updates continuing to be released for this subset of the WoW fan base. We’ve seen Season of Discovery and Classic Hardcore as never-before-seen additions to Retail World of Warcraft, along with seeing the original Classic server merge, through The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, and Cataclysm expansions, and soon after , we’ll see them enter Mists of Pandaria.

Around the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft and the 30th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise, WoW Classic saw new servers arrive. These massive servers exist as a fresh start for those who want to revisit Classic as it once was or those who couldn’t possibly keep up with the strict progression system that WoW had in its early days. The 20th anniversary server will enter Phase 2 on January 9, 2024, bringing new content to the server. Some of this content has been modified slightly, as the developers have learned from their previous shortcomings. In this article, you’ll learn everything you need to know about Classic’s 20th anniversary servers entering Phase 2.

New Content Overview

Phase 2 of the 20th anniversary edition of the Classic server will introduce the Honor System (along with the Alterac Valley and Warsong Gulch battlegrounds), the famous dungeon Dire Maul, and world bosses Azuregos and Kazzak to the new server. What better way to start the new year? When Phase 2 drops, which is in the afternoon (PST) of January 9, the updated Honor System, Dire Maul, and two world bosses will be available. On January 16th, about a week after this initial debut, Warsong Gulch and Alterac Valley will open for battle.

The week-long gap between the arrival of the Honor System and the opening of the battlegrounds will allow players to enjoy a lot of mayhem. Outdoor PvP will likely thrive in popular hotspots during this week, so be prepared for a cunning Rogue or Mage who can cast spells wherever you are!

The Arrival of Dire Maul to the 20th Anniversary Edition Server

Dire Maul, which was released at the start of Phase 2, currently has no changes whatsoever—at least none have been announced. This section will be a refresher on the most prominent aspects of this dungeon. Players will be able to enter Dire Maul once their toon is at or around level 55. The entrance is located in Feralas, Kalimdor, just north of The High Wilderness. Alliance players can reach it by flying to Thalanaar towards Feralas’ eastern border, walking west along the main road (and avoiding Horde territory), then turning left when they encounter The High Wilderness intersection. Horde players should fly to Camp Mojache, located in Feralas, and then travel west via the main road until they encounter a junction near The High Wilderness, where they should head north.

While Dire Maul has a solid breakdown for the armor and weapons it drops, some players can also utilize the loot pool in different ways. This dungeon is especially valuable for those with professions including Leatherworking, Tailoring, and Cooking. Many 300 skill level recipes were released from this dungeon for the professions mentioned above.

The Quel’Serrar, a one-handed weapon sought by Paladin tanks and Warriors, is awarded after completing a challenging mission. Part of this quest chain involves venturing into Dire Maul, and the rest in Onyxia’s Lair. Getting the Nostro Dragon Slaying Compendium is the first step to getting this weapon. This item is a rare drop from the Dire Maul boss, but can also be obtained from A Dusty Tome, which is a container found scattered throughout the instance.

The enemies in Dire Maul and the dusty tomes mentioned above can sometimes drop rare books. These books can be taken to the Shen’dralar Library to be exchanged for trinkets tailored to your class, along with the added bonus of fire resistance. Below, you can find out why your main class is doing this quick and easy search – in other words, what the trinket does for your class. Note that each trinket is called the Royal Seal of Eldre’Thalas, has an item level of 62, and adds 10 fire resistance to your character. They are also BoP.

Class Item/Search Name Small jewelry
Druids Emerald Dream Increases healing done by 44
Hunter The Greatest Hunter Race Extra 48 ranged attack power
Witch Arcanist Cookbook Recovers 8 extra mana every 5 seconds
Paladins Light and How to Swing It Additional 150 armor and healing increase completed, up to 22

Lastly, Dire Maul has several missions available to complete. These quests are as follows.

  • Mysterious Refreshment
  • Gordok Ogre suit
  • Lethtendris Web
    • Requirements vary between Alliance and Horde
  • Madness Within
  • Pusillin and Elder Azj’Tordin
  • Felvine Shard
  • Treasures of Shen’dralar
  • Gordok’s Unfinished Business

Azuregos and Kazzak – World Boss

Along with Dire Maul, world bosses Azuregos and Kazzak will be available with the launch of Phase 2.

Azuregos, the guardian of Malygos, is a powerful blue dragon that roams the southern and eastern parts of Azshara, Kalimdor. He is immune to arcane spells and highly resistant to frost damage, so DPS players should consider their specialization before trying their best on him. Azuregos does not have immediate respawns. In fact, the timing of his appearance is quite random, sometimes taking him days to reappear. He initially appears neutral and becomes hostile during interactions. Alliance players will need to fly to Talrendis Point, Azshara to find it. Horde players will need to fly to Valormok in Azshara to do the same.

Lord Kazzak appears in the Tainted Scar region of the Explosion Lands, Eastern Kingdoms. Specifically, he can be found in the southwest, near a giant crater filled with elite demon enemies. The respawn timer, like Azuregos, is random and can last several days. Alliance players can fly to the Blasted Lands to contact it via Nethergarde Keep. Horde players will need to visit Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows to get there.

Both of these world bosses will require teams of many people to defeat. They both have excellent equipment loot tables and can drop quest items.

Honor System and Battlegrounds (Alterac Valley and Warsong Gulch)

If you prefer fighting other players rather than fighting alongside them to defeat world bosses, the updated Honor System and upcoming battlegrounds will be for you! The new Honor system will be released on the 9th, and battlegrounds will arrive on the 16th. Your Honor Level will max out at Rank 11 until Phase 3 comes out. Although the best rewards come at Rank 14, it’s a good idea to start now. With the updated Honor System, your Honor will not decrease and your ranking will remain in place regardless of each week’s progress. Online calculators and add-ons like Ranker (available at CurseForge) can help you set goals for achieving the highest ranking available with the most efficiency. Remember that dishonorable killing isn’t much of a problem in the first week, so go wild in Tarren Mill and be merciless!

As far as battlegrounds go, which will be released about a week into Phase 2, Warsong Gulch is capture-the-flag type, and Alterac Valley is PvEvP with the goal of eliminating the opposing faction’s general. Battlegrounds are a huge source of Honor for the new Honor System, so get in line while you can! Horde players often experience longer wait times than Alliance. Meanwhile, open world mayhem awaits!

Final Thoughts

Phase 2 of the World of Warcraft: Classic 20th Anniversary server is coming soon, with the re-entry of Dire Maul, Azuregos, Lord Kazzak, and two battlegrounds into the Classic version of the game! Dire Maul features a new 5-player instance for 20th Anniversary players to tackle, while world bosses Azuregos and Lord Kazzak will require the strength and might of many players to stand a chance. The updated Honor System and improvements to the way player versus player play is sure to lead to some fun and engaging mayhem. On January 9, 2024, get out there and conquer these new (or perhaps returning) challenges…and create or recreate some memories while you’re at it!
