The trailer received negative reactions, with fans taking issue with Nolan’s casting decisions.

In X, fans argued that the actors did not resemble their historical counterparts. Others said the star power was distracting and prevented them from being immersed in the story.

“Jason Bourne and Spider-Man is terrible to watch,” said one user.

A second wrote, “It looks like ordinary stuff only done by a group of famous actors.”

“Matt Damon looks good, but Tom Holland? Looks too soft and preppy for the role,” commented a third.

Nolan was also criticized for allegedly casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. Although the actress is confirmed to appear in the film, her exact role is still unknown.

However, rumors suggest she may play the daughter of Homer who was described as the most beautiful woman in the world, often depicted with fair skin. As a result, some users accused Nolan of “blackwashing” the character.

One person commented, “I’m sorry, but Nolan’s casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy has completely taken the edge off this epic experience for me.”

Viewers argue that some the lines failed to reflect the story’s 8th century BC setting and even criticized the actors for using American accents.

“It is an insult to human intelligence that this film uses such horrific language,” said one user.

In one scene, Antinous by Robert Pattinson uses words like “dad” and “cry,” which many viewers found too modern for the setting.

One of the confused viewers asked, “Father…? In ancient Greece…?

“That word doesn’t even exist yet,” said a second.

After the trailer was released, many viewers speculated that the film might not be historically accurate due to its cast and dialogue.

Some even predict that this film will have difficulty at the box office.

On May 5, Nolan appeared on Late ShowWhere he discussed his upcoming film with host Stephen Colbert.

The Oscar-winning director explained that he had long been fascinated by ancient literature. He added that the lack of large-scale adaptations of Homer’s epics motivated him to take on the story.

“It’s just one of the great adventure stories, and I would really like to see it done justice,” he said.

He also cited the work of visual effects artist Ray Harryhausen in 1981 The clash of the Titans as the main inspiration. At the same time, Nolan admits that filming the ancient epic proved daunting.

“We do want to go out and really try to do a lot of these things for real,” he added.

Odyssey is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 17, 2026.
